Vegan Mozzarella Sticks

Makes about 8

Mozzarella sticks are the end all be all of fried food. They’re gooey, greasy, cheesy and delicious. Too bad it’s almost impossible to find good Vegan Mozzarella Sticks…. Until NOW!

Regular coatings for frying usually involve 3 steps: dip in flour, dip in egg mixture, dip in breadcrumb coating. Substituting out for that egg step always throws people off, but there are amazing vegan substitutes that make it super easy to bread and fry your food.

We chose to use a non-dairy milk and a vegan mayonnaise mixture to act as our wet binding agent in this recipe, but you can also use vegan buttermilk (non-dairy milk mixed with apple cider vinegar), or a batter mixture with a binder like cornstarch or ground flax seeds.

Ingredients

1 block vegan mozzarella flavored cheese

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup non-dairy milk

3 Tbsp vegan mayonnaise

1 cup panko breadcrumbs

sea salt, to taste

freshly ground pepper, to taste

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes

1 tsp parsley flakes

Canola oil, for frying

prep

Slice your vegan mozzarella block into 1/2” thick strips.

Prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment.

Set out 3 large shallow bowls (pie pans work well) in a row next to your baking sheet.

Prepare a large platter covered in paper towels.

Method

In one of the shallow bowls, add your all-purpose flour.

In the next shallow bowl, combine your non-dairy milk and vegan mayonnaise.

In the last shallow bowl. Combine your panko breadcrumbs, sea salt, freshly ground pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, crushed red pepper flakes, and parsley flakes.

Place one of the slices of vegan mozzarella in the flour bowl and lightly coat.

With another hand dredge the stick in the non-dairy milk mixture to coat.

Place the stick in the final breadcrumb mixture, and use your dry hand to coat fully.

Place the coated stick onto the baking sheet.

Continue the process with all of the vegan mozzarella sticks.

Once the sticks are coated, place the entire sheet in the freezer for 1 hour.

frying

Fill a large pan with tall sides with 1 inch of canola oil.

Heat the pan on medium heat.

Once the oil is fully heated (test by placing the end of one vegan mozzarella stick in the oil and watch for sizzling), carefully place 3-4 sticks in at a time.

Let fry for about 1 minute on each side, carefully turning until golden brown.

Carefully remove the sticks and place on the paper towel covered platter.

Season with sea salt and allow to cool.

Notes + Serving Tips

Serve immediately with your dip of choice.

You can make a large batch ahead of time and keep them in the freezer after breading and before frying.
