You’ve probably heard some chatter around the water cooler recently about Mercury being in retrograde…
You probably nodded your head and said something agreeable while sending out a group SOS text.
And chances are, you probably heard it ain’t good!
Well, we’re here to explain everything you need to know about this tiny huge thing.
WHAT’S THE SCIENCE?
In our big wide solar system Mercury is closer to the Sun than the Earth and therefore speeds up and passes the Earth on its rotation three to four times a year. As it passes the Earth, Mercury appears to slow down, come to a stop, and reverse itself. It doesn’t actually move backwards, but this period is what we know as retrograde, and it has some pretty crazy effects.
SO, WHATS THE BIG DEALIO?
In astrology the planet Mercury rules communication, travel, and technology. During the three weeks of retrograde (in this case January 5th - 25th) everything is a bit chaotic. Dialogue is lost in translation, electronics malfunction, and plans get broken. When Mercury is in retrograde a good rule of thumb is to always err on the side of caution.
WHAT’S A GIRL TO DO?
Well first and foremost, remember that Mercury rules all forms of communications: listening, speaking, negotiating, buying, even contracts and agreements. Be extra careful this month before signing your name on the dotted line or sending off that important email. Proof read everything, and then… proof it again! Have a friend or trusted adviser look over all legal documents, and ask for a second opinion.
Make sure to back up all of your electronics, retrograde is known to mysteriously affect even the newest apple products. If you’re going to book travel, make sure to buy insurance, no one is immune to the mysterious ways of the universe.
THE DON’TS:
If you can avoid it, don’t plan any big trips or purchase any fancy new electronics until after the 25th.
Don’t take every miscommunication to heart. During retrograde, many interactions can get lost in the shuffle, and friends and loved ones may come off indecisive at this time. Let it roll of your shoulders for now, it’s important not to dwell. If you’re upset, chalk it up to the Universe and its sly tricks.
