Transitioning seasons means ch-ch-ch-changes!
We begin to trade bare skin for light jackets, beach bags for book bags, and most importantly iced bevs for warm ones. This Fall, we’re sick of waiting in line for run of the mill, stale beverages.
We’re in the DIY mood, and we’re sharing our secrets with all of you! Brave the brisk weather with a hot homemade drink that goes far beyond the usual coffee.
Take advantage of delicious seasonal ingredients before they’re gone!
Pro tip: These are all virgin recipes, but they are all easy to spike… so drink with caution!
1. MULLED APPLE CIDER
Serves 8
Put a twist on a classic. Make your quick cider and then save the rest for later. Buy apple juice by the bottle or juice your own. Add spiced rum for a boozy kick!
INGREDIENTS:
8 cups of apple cider
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
2 whole oranges, peels and juice
4 whole cloves
METHOD:
Combine apple cider, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, and cloves to a large sauce pan and let simmer. Add juice from both oranges and then add peels. Let simmer for 8-10 minutes. Remove cinnamon sticks and cloves before serving.
NOTES + SERVING TIPS:
Use cinnamon sticks to stir and garnish. Serve hot.
2. GINGER TEA
Serves 4
Enter stage left: the perfect cold and flu season remedy. Protect yourself from the sniffles with this ginger tea recipe. Ginger is a miracle healer and works well to remedy cold symptoms and prevent future infection.
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups of water
2-inch piece of fresh ginger root
½ lemon
METHOD:
Peel the ginger and slice thin. Bring water to a boil in a saucepan, and add ginger root. Cover and bring down to simmer for 10-15 minutes.
NOTES + SERVING TIPS:
Garnish with a lemon wedge. Serve hot.
For maximum pleasure, try adding sweetener — organic sugar and raw agave pair nicely.
3. PUMPKIN SPICED LATTE
Serves 2-3
The hottest fall/winter beverage is probably holding you up on line at Starbucks. No thanks! Be your own barista, and whip up your own PSL at home.
Let’s face it, you know you’re all about pumpkin right now because #Fall.
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup soy, almond or rice milk
¾ cup water
¾ cup pumpkin puree
¼ cup organic sugar
2 tsp instant espresso powder
1 tsp pumpkin pie sauce
¼ tsp sea salt
METHOD:
In a medium saucepan, whisk together all ingredients. Heat over medium heat, whisking frequently until the mixture comes to a simmer. Remove from heat for serving.
NOTES + SERVING TIPS:
Serve hot.
Top it off with Coconut Whipped Cream for extra deliciousness.
